There is love in the air for the character's of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights and, there is no holding back, the emotions that will be shown between them. There is two couples that we will see Heathcliff and Catherine and, their next generation couple Cathy and Hareton. Let's see how they relate under cupid's arrows.
Let's start with the first generation Heathcliff and Catherine and their relationship is one big roller coaster complete with all the ups and, down, twist and, turns. Where do we begin how about the fact that they have been childhood friends since the first got to know each other. Nelly explains "The greatest punishment we could invent for her was to keep her separate from him;" (Bronte 46). They were already on the road to a good relationship.
Then they hits a bumpy patch that ripped them apart but; they never gave up on each other. Finally after years of separation and, each having married someone else they died and as ghost are said to live together forever.
Now, they may not have had the fairy tale ending that could have come out of this but what can be said they now can have each other for eternity. Let's see if their next generation can do any better and, get together in their life time.
There is much to said of how these two got started and how it all ended up they like their elders had a rocky patch but theirs starts right out of the gate. With Hareton not able to read he is ridiculed by her when they first meet. not the start that spells in love now does it but, life has a way of turning the tables on us all. With Cathy now a widow after her first husband Linton dead she is trapped with no one to love her.
Except Hareton may have something to say about that. He tries to show her that he cares about her and she does not realize it. Some, may be thinking that if this goes anymore downhill this love is going to be six feet under before they are but, there is still one more curve ball to be seen. When, she does see what he has done for her she starts to show that same compassion back and here is the uphill swing.
Now things have changed; now Cathy wants to help him and get to know him better. They became closer over a book "I perceived two such radiant countenances bent over the page of the accepted book, that I did not doubt the treaty had been ratified, on both sides, and the enemies were, thenceforth, sworn allies." (299). That must have been one good book.
So, they had a similar path with each relationship and some difference. In the end one couple is happy living together and, one is forever together beyond the grave.
There is just one question left had they not had their starting the way they did would they be together in the end? For either couple?
